You don’t have to be a fan of horror movies to know that Nashville bats are creepy animals. With an ugly face, sharp fangs, and a screeching sound, these creatures are like flying rats that swoop around looking for prey. They are terrifying in so many ways. What makes bats even worse is that they carry a huge amount of disease with them, including such things as rabies. Because Tennessee bats fly and don’t care much about the areas they reside in, they will urinate and defecate with no concern about where they are. It doesn’t matter what they drop to the ground because they live hanging from the top of a cave, ceiling or eave. This means that all their parasites and germs are being dropped below, easily spreading with each drop.



Adding to the disaster of these Tennessee critters is that they live as large groups. They are colonial animals that swarm into a new home where they breed and live virtually without being stopped because most are afraid of them. Let me begin by pointing out that there are no known bat repellants that work. There are many that are offered, and they claim that they work well, but that is simply not the case. You might as well just throw your money in the garbage for all the good these repellants will do.

Many also propose using high-pitched noise makers as a way of scaring away the Tennessee bats. These are supposed to affect their ability to fly and hear correctly, causing them to avoid your property. That would be a great idea if they worked, but the problem is that they do not work. Now that we know what does not work, let’s talk about what does. Your first plan of action is to ensure that there are no ways that a bat can find entry into your home. You want to make sure that if there are any holes or cracks in the walls of your home, shed or garage, especially in your attic area, that you seal these immediately. Use a substance like caulk to close the gaps make sure that the seal is at least 3/8 of an inch in length.

If you want to add an additional measure where you have placed the caulk, then included a small piece of wire mesh or steel wool over the area where you made the seal. Bats can chew on many different kinds of metals, and effectively break the seal, but steel wool in particular is very hard and irritating for them to get to. The wire mesh is effective because even if they are able to chew a piece apart they will find that the caulk is still there, get discourage and leave.
